How the Attractiveness Test Works
The whole process takes about a minute and happens in four steps.
Step 1: Choose a clear photo
Use a recent, front-facing photo in soft, even light. Keep a neutral expression, look straight at the camera, and hold the phone at eye level about an arm’s length away. Remove glasses and pull hair away from your forehead and jaw. Filters, beauty modes and wide-angle selfie lenses distort proportions and will change your score.
Step 2: The AI finds your facial landmarks
A face-detection model locates your face, then a landmark model places 68 points along your brows, eyes, nose, lips and jawline. This is the same 68-point layout used widely in facial-analysis research.
Step 3: Your proportions are measured
The tool calculates distances, ratios and angles between those points. These measurements describe geometry. They do not describe whether someone finds you attractive. A face that scores 6 can be the most striking person in the room, and plenty of people with “perfect” ratios do not stand out at all.
What Your Face Rating Means: The Score Guide
Your report shows a 0–100 beauty score and the equivalent rating on a 1–10 attractiveness scale. Here is how to read them.
Your measured proportions sit further from the reference ratios. Photo quality, angle and lighting often pull scores into this range, so retake the photo before drawing conclusions.
The most common range. Features are balanced, with clear individual strengths.
Strong symmetry and proportion across most measurements.
Very close alignment with the reference proportions on nearly every measurement.
Is a 5 out of 10 bad? No. On any fair 1–10 attractiveness scale, 5 is average by definition, and average faces are rated as attractive in research. A mid-range score means your proportions are typical, not that you are unattractive.
Why does my score change between photos? Camera distance, lens, head tilt, expression and light all shift the landmark positions slightly. A selfie taken 30 cm away makes the nose look larger and the face narrower. For a fair comparison, use the same setup each time.

Is an AI Attractiveness Test Accurate? What the Science Says
Short answer: an AI attractiveness test can measure facial proportions accurately. It cannot measure attractiveness itself, because attraction depends on the person looking, the culture, the context and far more than one still photo. The measurements are real. The meaning you give them is up to you.
Here is what decades of research on facial attractiveness actually show, and how Pretty Scale Me uses it.
Averageness
In 1878, Francis Galton blended photographs of many faces into composites and noticed the blended faces looked better than most of the individuals. In 1990, psychologists Judith Langlois and Lori Roggman tested this properly and found that digitally averaged faces were rated more attractive as more faces were added. “Average” here means typical proportions, not ordinary looks. This is one of the strongest findings in attractiveness research, and it is why the tool rewards balanced, typical ratios rather than extremes.
Symmetry
Research led by Gillian Rhodes and others found that people generally prefer more symmetrical faces. One explanation is that symmetry can signal developmental stability and health. The effect is real but moderate, and perfectly mirrored faces often look artificial. That is why your symmetry score is one input among many.
Sexual dimorphism
Features associated with typical femininity (for example fuller lips, a smaller jaw, higher cheekbones) or typical masculinity (a stronger jaw and brow, a wider face) influence ratings. Preferences here vary more between people and cultures than preferences for averageness and symmetry do.
Skin
Even skin tone and smooth texture strongly affect perceived health and attractiveness. It is also one of the most changeable parts of your score, through sleep, sun protection, hydration and a basic skincare routine.
The golden ratio
The golden ratio (phi, about 1.618) is a mathematical proportion related to the Fibonacci sequence. It appears in Renaissance art, including work associated with Leonardo da Vinci, and in the “beauty mask” developed by Dr. Stephen Marquardt. Studies that test it directly show weak and inconsistent links with rated attractiveness. We include it because many people search for it and it is an interesting proportion check. We weight it less than symmetry, averageness and skin evenness.
Machine-learning beauty models
Researchers have trained models on datasets of faces rated by human volunteers, such as SCUT-FBP5500. These models can predict average ratings fairly well, but they inherit the biases of whoever did the rating, including age, ethnicity and culture. Any AI face rater, including this one, reflects that limitation.
The halo effect
In 1972, Karen Dion, Ellen Berscheid and Elaine Walster published “What Is Beautiful Is Good,” showing that people tend to assume attractive people have other positive traits. It is a real bias, not a truth about anyone, and it is worth remembering when you read a score about yourself.
Bottom line: use your beauty score as structured feedback about proportion and presentation. Do not treat it as a measure of how lovable, successful or valuable you are.
Golden Ratio Face Test Explained
The golden ratio face test compares your facial measurements with 1.618, the number you get when a line is divided so that the whole line divided by the longer part equals the longer part divided by the shorter part.
Each ratio gets a closeness percentage, and the average becomes your golden ratio match.
What is a good golden ratio face score? In our tool, a match above 80% means most of your ratios sit close to 1.618. However, many people with lower matches are considered very attractive, because real faces are judged holistically. The golden ratio is best read as a description of proportion, not a beauty grade.
Golden ratio vs facial thirds. Facial thirds divide the face vertically into three equal zones: hairline to eyebrows, eyebrows to the base of the nose, and nose base to chin. Aesthetic surgeons and orthodontists use thirds and fifths in clinical planning more often than the golden ratio because they are simpler and more reliable. Your report shows both.
The test checks ratios such as these:
- Face length compared with face width
- Mouth width compared with nose width
- Distance from the pupils to the chin compared with the pupils to the nose tip
- Nose width compared with the distance between the eyes
- Lip-line to chin compared with nose tip to lip-line
Facial Symmetry Test: How Symmetrical Is Your Face?
The facial symmetry test mirrors pairs of landmarks across the vertical midline of your face, such as the eye corners, brow peaks, nostrils, mouth corners and jaw points. It then measures how far each pair is from perfect alignment. The smaller the differences, the higher your symmetry percentage.
What is a normal facial symmetry score?
Every human face is asymmetrical to some degree. Small differences in brow height, eye size, nostril shape or smile are normal. In our tool, most photos land in the middle of the range, and very high scores are uncommon.
What causes facial asymmetry?
Common causes include genetics, sleeping on one side, chewing on one side, dental alignment, past injuries, sun damage and natural ageing. Much of what the camera shows as asymmetry comes from a slightly tilted head or uneven light, so a careful retake can raise your score.
Can you improve facial symmetry?
Grooming the brows evenly, adjusting a hair part, balancing makeup or contour on both sides, and checking posture all reduce visible asymmetry. For bite or jaw concerns, a dentist or orthodontist is the right person to ask.
Is perfect symmetry most attractive?
No. Composite images made perfectly symmetrical often look unnatural. Slight asymmetry is part of what makes a face recognisable and expressive.
Facial Harmony: Thirds, Fifths and Balance
Facial harmony describes how well your features work together as a whole, rather than how each one scores alone. Two faces with identical individual feature scores can look very different, because the relationships between features matter more than the features themselves.
Facial thirds test
Balanced thirds means the upper, middle and lower thirds are roughly equal in height. A longer lower third can make the jaw look stronger. A shorter middle third can make the face look younger.
Facial fifths
Seen from the front, a balanced face is about five eye-widths across. The space between the eyes is roughly one eye-width. This drives your eye spacing score.
Side profile

Knowing your face shape is one of the most practical results in the report, because it helps you choose haircuts, glasses, beard styles and makeup that suit your structure.
Oval
Face length is about 1.5 times the width, the forehead is slightly wider than the chin, and the jaw is softly rounded. Most haircuts and frames suit oval faces.
Round
Length and width are similar, with full cheeks and a soft jawline. Height at the crown, long layers and angular frames add length.
Square
Forehead, cheekbones and jaw are close in width, with a strong, angular jaw. Soft layers, side parts and round or oval frames soften the angles.
Rectangle (oblong)
Longer than wide, with forehead, cheeks and jaw similar in width. Volume at the sides, curtain bangs and wider frames add balance.
Heart
A wider forehead narrows to a pointed chin, often with high cheekbones. Chin-length cuts, side-swept bangs and bottom-heavy frames balance the shape.
Diamond
Cheekbones are the widest point, with a narrower forehead and chin. Fringes, fuller styles at the chin and oval or cat-eye frames suit this shape.
Triangle (pear)
The jaw is wider than the forehead. Volume at the top of the head and frames with strong upper rims balance the lower face.
Inverted triangle
A wide forehead and a narrow jaw, similar to heart but with a less pointed chin. Styles with volume near the jaw work well.
Long
Similar to rectangle but with a softer, more rounded jaw. Horizontal volume and shorter layers reduce the sense of length.

Bust or shoulders and hips are similar in width, with a clearly narrower waist. Wrap dresses, belts and tailored fits follow your natural line.
Pear (triangle)
Hips are wider than shoulders, with a defined waist. Structured shoulders, brighter tops and A-line skirts balance your proportions.
Apple (round)
More volume through the midsection, with slimmer legs. V-necks, empire waists and straight-leg trousers create a longer line.
Rectangle (straight)
Shoulders, waist and hips are similar in width. Belts, peplums, layering and texture add shape. This is a common athletic build.
Inverted triangle
Shoulders are wider than hips. Wide-leg trousers, A-line skirts and simpler tops balance the upper body.

Pretty Scale Me works for all genders. When you choose “male” in the test, the face rating adjusts for features commonly associated with male attractiveness, so the question “am I handsome?” gets a fair answer.

How to Get the Most Accurate Face Rating
Most low or inconsistent scores come from the photo, not the face. Follow these tips before you take the attractiveness test.
Use soft, even front light. Face a window in daylight. Harsh overhead light creates shadows that the AI can read as asymmetry.
Hold the camera at eye level. Shooting from below enlarges the jaw and nose. Shooting from above shortens the lower face.
Stand back. Wide-angle phone lenses distort faces at close range. Use the rear camera, stand about 1.5 metres away and zoom 2x if you can.
Keep your head straight. Even a small tilt changes symmetry scores.
Use a neutral expression. A big smile changes lip and cheek measurements. Try both, and compare.
Show your whole face. Pull hair back from the forehead and jaw and remove glasses.
Turn off filters and beauty modes. They reshape features and make the score meaningless.
Compare like with like. When tracking changes over time, use the same room, time of day and camera.
